Cet ouvrage constitue le deuxième volet de la fabuleuse collection de dessins du XIXe siècle conservés par la Bibliothèque-Musée de l’Opéra. Mais alors que le premier volume ne présentait que des décors et des costumes exécutés pour cette institution, celui-ci révèle l'activité de décorateurs français pour les autres théâtres, à Paris principalement, mais aussi en province et à l'étranger. Des notices sur les décorateurs (parmi lesquels Ciceri, Cambon, Despléchin, Chaperon) et de nombreuses illustrations permettent de mieux comprendre la fascination que ces magiciens de la scène exercèrent sur leurs contemporains, bien au-delà de nos frontières.
